When our son turned five, it was time to transform his plain toddler room into a space for a bigger boy, filled with inspiring color, storage options, and room for his imagination to grow. His favorite colors are blue and green so I incorporated vivid shades of those two into the room design. Knowing an intense blue paint color was destined for the walls, I installed a board and batten treatment on the lower part, which brought fresh, crisp white into the space to contrast with the intense blue above.I added boyish blue stripe to his plain dresser to give it a nautical flair. What was once a plain pastel room is now a coastal-inspired blue and white space for an imaginative little boy!

Adventurous boys need storage for all of their toys and it’s smart to use the vertical space in a child’s room for that purpose. Tall tower shelves store books, and toys are corralled in cloth bins. Shelving above the dresser is another source of storage - this one for collectibles and keepsakes.

Closet space is reserved for clothing storage, and a rack behind the door stores shirts, hats, and sometimes capes and costumes.Since the bedroom is of smaller proportions, we decided to keep the platform bed, but gave it a fresh coat of green paint.
Above the bed is a gallery wall filled with images of favorite things, from speedy vehicles to Star Wars playmates.
Every kid’s space should have a dash of whimsy, so in our boy’s room I painted his play table with teal blue chalkboard paint. The surface transforms into a racetrack or helicopter landing pad with some simple sketches.
